A project focused on ADS Level 4 localisation

The RELIANT4AD project, granted by EUSPA and led by Thales Alenia Space France, kicked off in April with the objective of developing reliable and high precision positioning for automated driving.

The project leverages Galileo differentiators to answer ADS Level 4 localisation requirements, where high accuracy, availability, continuity, ubiquity, fast convergence, robustness, resilience, and safety must work together inside real vehicle constraints.

Road transport applications, including personal and professional mobility, are going through a true revolution: Automated Driving. It will change how people and goods are transported, improve global safety and logistics, and significantly affect complete sectors of the economy in the next decade through better efficiency.

Why Galileo changes the positioning conversation

The new HAS and OSNMA services from Galileo position Galileo-based receivers as major game changers in tomorrow's ADS localisation solutions.

These services bring key and fundamental characteristics to the localisation solution: high precision and security.

The RELIANT4AD solution aims to foster the adoption of Galileo added-value services and advanced Signal-in-Space design as a key feature for highly automated driving positioning systems.

Four pillars guide the technical and market approach

The approach proposed by the Thales Alenia Space-led consortium, in answer to EUSPA needs and objectives for this project, may be summarised through the following key pillars.

  • A product-oriented approach, leveraging Valeo, FDC, and STMicroelectronics as major actors for access to market, bringing viability to the business plan and a short commercialisation roadmap. Outreach will be boosted by dissemination toward targeted stakeholders, building on the dynamic created in the CCAM ecosystem, the 5GAA association, Intelligent Transport Systems, and GNSS-related events and conferences.
  • A holistic analysis of Galileo and EGNSS differentiators, including HAS, OSNMA, multi-frequency and multi-constellation positioning, and wide-band processing through AltBOC demonstrations.
  • An innovative and safe sensor-fusion integrity concept and design, featuring a tightly coupled sensor-fusion scheme for enhanced continuity and availability, multi-layer Fault Detection and Exclusion, majority voting schemes, integrity monitoring, multi-layer anti-spoofing resilience, and proprioceptive and exteroceptive sensors including ASIL B certified radar and lidar-based positioning solutions from the Valeo product suite.
  • A design fulfilling automotive standards for safety-related developments applicable to highly and fully automated driving.
